Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I buy a Visitor to Canada policy?
Visitor to Canada insurance is deigned to protect you and your family against the emergency medical costs of unexpected accident or illness while in Canada. One day in hospital can cost as much as $5,000. A 21st Century Visitor to Canada policy will provide critical emergency assistance and reimburse you for eligible expenses related to medical emergencies while in Canada.
What insurance do I need for the Super Visa?
The government of Canada requires that those applying for a Super Visa have a valid emergency medical travel insurance policy for a minimum period of 1-year and a minimum coverage limit of $100,000. Whether you pay up front or choose our convenient monthly payment plan, all 21st Century Visitor to Canada policies are fully compliant with the Super Visa requirements. Anyone visiting or re-visiting Canada on a Super Visa is required to purchase insurance that meets these requirements for each entry into Canada.
Is there an age limit to purchase a policy?
Our Enhanced and Standard plans are available up to and including age 85. There is no age limit on the Basic plan.
What is considered a pre-existing medical condition and what classifies it as stable?
A pre-existing medical condition is defined as “any sickness, illness, disease, symptom, or injury that existed or for which medication has been taken, received, or prescribed (including prescribed as needed), or for which treatment has been prescribed or received.”
For a pre-existing medical condition to be covered under the Enhanced plan, the condition itself and any treatment must be stable and unchanged in the 180 days prior to the policy’s effective date. Pre-existing medical conditions are NOT covered under the Standard or Basic plans regardless of whether they are stable or unstable.
Does Visitor to Canada insurance cover regular and routine check-ups?
No. Visitor to Canada insurance is emergency medical insurance only. It covers a lot, but it does not cover things like routine health maintenance or prescription refills/renewals. Our Enhanced plan covers stable pre-existing conditions, but Standard and Basic do not.
Can I purchase a policy if I’m already in Canada?
Yes, but a waiting period will apply unless you are already insured with us and there will be no gap or change in coverage. Please review the policy wording and speak with your licensed agent for details.
Can I extend my coverage?
You cannot extend coverage on an existing policy that has already gone into effect. You can purchase a new policy for any additional days. This policy will have new eligibility requirements and the pre-existing condition exclusion will reset to the effective date of the new policy.
If I leave early, can I get a refund?
Refunds are available in many circumstances. Check out this chart for a more detailed explanation of the requirements to process a refund.
What if I change my mind after purchasing a policy?
You may cancel the insurance any time prior to the effective date shown on the policy confirmation if the insurance has not been used as part of a visa application.
Is your Visitor to Canada insurance affordable?
21st Century is proud to offer a policy that balances affordability with benefits. Consider adding a deductible to help lower the premium. Deductibles apply per person per policy on the Enhanced and Standard plans (per claim on Basic). A companion discount is available and we also offer family rates.
