Travelling Within
Canada?
-
When travelling outside of your province of residence but in Canada, there are limits on how much your government health insurance plan will pay for emergency medical expenses. Costs that may not be covered include air/ground ambulance, repatriation, emergency dental treatment and prescription drug expenses. Emergency Medical travel insurance can help cover these costs while providing a discount up to 50%.
-
Government health insurance plans do not cover expenses related to the non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip. 21st Century's Single Trip All-Inclusive plan provides you with Emergency Medical coverage, Trip Cancellation & Interruption, Flight & Travel Accident and Baggage all at up to a 50% discount.
Applying for a
Schengen Visa?

-
A Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa that allows you to travel between any of the participating countries where common entry requirements have eliminated the need for most internal border controls, allowing free and unrestricted movement of people.
-
21st Century's travel insurance policy provides emergency medical coverage worldwide, subject to all policy terms and conditions, including countries where a Schengen Visa is required.
-
When applying for a Schengen Visa, you are required to show that you have travel medical insurance that meets the requirements as listed by the European Commission. Purchasing travel insurance does not guarantee you will be granted a Schengen Visa.
Travelling More Than
183 Days?

-
Canadian provinces and territories have residency requirements for their residents to maintain their government health insurance plan.
-
Residents must be physically present in their province for at least 183 days (212 days for Ontario and Newfoundland) in a 12-month period to maintain their government health insurance.
-
For Canadians who will be away for longer trips, they must arrange an extension on their government health insurance before they depart on their trip.
-
Policies that include Emergency Medical coverage require that you have and maintain your government health insurance for the full duration of your trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to purchase insurance for trips within Canada?
Government health insurance plans provide limited coverage when travelling outside of your province of residence for emergency medical expenses. Costs such as ambulance, repatriation, emergency dental treatment, prescription drugs and the non-refundable cost of the trip are not covered.
Can I purchase insurance after I depart on my trip?
In most cases, travel insurance needs to be arranged prior to your departure from your province of residence with the following exceptions:
-
You are requesting to extend or top-up to an existing 21st Century policy that has not yet expired (Note: We cannot top-up up another insurer's policy after departure).
-
You are still in Canada and request that coverage only starts when you leave Canada.
Is there an age limit to purchase a policy?
All applicants must be at least 30 days of age to be insured under a 21st Century policy. All plans are available to applicants up to and including 111 years old.
Will my insurance cover a pre-existing medical condition?
Emergency Medical:
Pre-existing medical conditions must be stable in the 3, 6 or 12 months prior to your departure date depending on your age and selected plan.
-
3 months for applicants under the age 60 who purchase any plan that includes Emergency Medical coverage.
-
3 months for applicants under the age 75 who purchase the Single Trip All-Inclusive plan.
-
6 months for applicants who are age 60 and older and qualify for B or C rates on the Single Trip Emergency Medical, Multi-trip Emergency Medical or Multi-trip All-Inclusive plans.
-
12 months for applicants 75 and older who purchase the Single Trip All-Inclusive plan.
Trip Cancellation & Interruption:
Pre-existing medical conditions must be stable in the 3 or 12 months prior to your purchase date (issue date) depending on the trip cost:
-
For trips less than $20,000, 3 months stable for you, your spouse and children.
-
For trips $20,000 or more, 12 months stable for you, your immediate family, your travel companion, your key person and your host.
Refer to the policy wording for details.
What does travel insurance cover?
This depends entirely on the plan you select. Emergency Medical insurance covers costs associated with unexpected and unforeseen medical emergencies while travelling outside of your province of residence. Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance covers the cost of the non-refundable trip arrangements that become unusable when you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered event. Flight & Travel Accident provides a payment in the event an injury causes you to lose limbs, become permanently blind or die. Baggage reimburses you for the costs associated with the loss, damage or delay of your checked baggage.
What does travel insurance NOT cover?
The most common exclusions for Emergency Medical are unstable pre-existing medical conditions or seeking treatment for something that is not considered a medical emergency. Please refer to the policy wordings for a full list of exclusions.
Can I extend my coverage?
Yes. You typically can extend coverage of your existing 21st Century policy if your coverage hasn't already expired and you have not had any changes in your health. We can extend or top-up coverage on all of our plans.
If I return early, can I get a refund?
Refunds are available on your Emergency Medical coverage for early return if there have been no claims or assistance provided by the claims office. All refunds are subject to a $25 minimum premium and $25 processing fee. Refunds are not available on policies that include Trip Cancellation & Interruption coverage or Multi-Trip policies.
What if I change my mind after purchasing a policy?
You may cancel Emergency Medical insurance any time prior to the effective date shown on the policy confirmation. Policies that include Trip Cancellation & Interruption or Multi-Trip policies are non-refundable.
Is your travel insurance affordable?
21st Century is proud to offer a policy that balances affordability with benefits. All plans are eligible for our companion discount. Our Single Trip Emergency Medical, Single Trip All-Inclusive, Multi-Trip Emergency Medical and Non-Medical Inclusive plans offer family rates. Single Trip Emergency Medical and Single Trip All-Inclusive offer up to a 50% discount for trips taken within Canada.
